Flying Aces Picnic 99 and Ocean Yacht Cruise

by John Nogatch jtn@bob.te-cats.com

For the August club meeting, club manager Doug Groom invited the Aces to a picnic lunch at Moss Landing harbor, to be followed by a harbor cruise and ocean cruise. Members convened at noon, with seven adults & 3 youngsters, to enjoy lasagna, crab salad, fresh vegetables, key lime pie, soft drinks & chips.

The normal Monterey Bay fog was absent. Under sunny sky & a cool 10 kt breeze, we boarded Doug's 41' ketch & motored away from the slip, nearly leaving Skip behind. The motor was kept at slow, because the sea water cooling pump was inoperative, as were the 2 heads. Doug's solution was to periodically add water to an open radiator cap, turning the below decks into a steam room.

Clear of the harbor, we gave the engine a rest by setting sail northward, paralleling the coast. Turning about after reaching Pajaro Dunes, we were regaled by an unexpected aerobatics demonstration performed by someone presumably flying out of nearby Watsonville airport.

Doug urged everyone to take a turn at the helm, & then the engine was restarted to thread our way back through the harbor, where we finished tying up & stowing gear around 18:00.

Aces thank Doug & Mother Nature for a beautiful day on the bay.
